Description

“The southwest is a place of enormous power and mystery. Mountains, deserts, huge expanses of landscape with no signs of man. The vastness suggests it should be rendered large and yet I have chosen to depict it using a 0.5 graphite 2B and 6B mechanical pencil. The scale I hope forces the viewer to walk across the room to take a look at what might appear at first to be a photograph, Upon closer inspection tiny marks of graphite texture reveal these to be drawings. I want the viewer to see the marks, the textures rendered by my pencil. I think landscapes, and travel experiences are like that as well. The traveler or hiker is often rewarded for the effort of reaching out, exploring and looking closer.” The hope of the artist, Rhonda Smith.
